AI assistance

Draft issues from a sentence, break epics into stories, summarise an issue and find duplicates, using your own AI key or the built-in provider.

Settings → AI providers

AI assistance helps with the writing and checking around issues: it can draft an issue from one sentence, break an epic into stories, summarise an issue's discussion, find likely duplicates and propose a dashboard. Every assistant is off until an admin connects a provider and switches it on, and none of them saves anything by itself.

What the assistants do

  • Draft with AI on the new issue form: describe the issue in a sentence and select Draft. The title, a Markdown description with acceptance criteria, and a type and priority from the project's own lists are filled in for you. If you had already typed a title or description, you are asked before it is replaced. Nothing is created until you select Create.
  • Break down with AI on an epic's Child issues section: proposes up to 12 stories with descriptions and story points. Untick the ones you do not want, edit titles, and create the rest as the epic's children.
  • Summarise in the AI assistant card on an open issue: two to five bullet points on what the issue is, what has been decided, where it stands and what is still open.
  • Find duplicates in the same card: up to three other issues of the same type in the same project (merged issues are left out) that may describe the same problem, each with a confidence and a reason. Select Link as duplicate to link one.
  • Compose on a dashboard: describe what you want to keep an eye on, and a layout is proposed for you to adjust and save.

Each assistant runs only when someone asks for it. Buttons for an assistant that is switched off are not shown.

Issue automations and automation rules are rule-based and do not use AI.

Choose where the AI comes from

Open Settings → AI providers (the page is titled AI & Automation). Under Provider mode choose one of:

  • Bring your own key: your workspace uses its own account with a provider. Requests and their cost go to that account.
  • Use built-in AI: the service's own provider account is used, so you need no key. Available on plans that include Built-in AI Provider, and only once the service operator has set it up; otherwise the button is disabled.

If built-in mode is selected but is no longer available, the assistants fall back to your own connected provider, if there is one.

Connect your own provider

  1. With Bring your own key selected, find the card for your provider: Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, OpenRouter or GateLLM.
  2. Keep the default Base URL or enter your own endpoint, paste your API key and select Save.
  3. Tick Enabled on the card.
  4. Select Test connection to check the key, and Fetch models to load the models you can pick from.

The key is stored encrypted and only a short preview is shown afterwards. Use Replace to change it or Disconnect to remove it. A base URL that points at a private or internal network address is refused.

Switch on each assistant

The Feature routing list has one row per assistant: Duplicate issue detection, Dashboard composer (from a prompt), Summarise an issue and its discussion, Draft an issue from a sentence and Break an epic down into stories.

  1. Pick the provider (in your-own-key mode) and the model. If the model list is empty, type the model ID.
  2. Tick Enabled and select Save.

Routing is workspace-wide and applies to every project.

What is sent to the provider

Only what the assistant you asked for needs, when you ask for it:

  • Draft with AI: your sentence, the project's name and key, and the names of its enabled types and priorities.
  • Break down with AI: the epic's title and description, and the project's issue types.
  • Summarise: the issue's title, its description and its latest 40 comments, internal comments included.
  • Find duplicates: this issue's title and description, plus the title and the start of the description of up to 50 other issues of the same type in the project that you can see.
  • Compose: what you typed, and the list of available dashboard widgets.

Text you write is passed to the model as data, never as instructions. What the model sends back is checked: a type, priority or issue it names that does not exist in your workspace is dropped.

With your own key, data goes to the provider you connected under your agreement with them. With built-in AI it goes to the provider the service operator chose. Review that provider's data terms before switching assistants on.

Who can do what

  • Owners and Admins can change AI settings. Auditors can open the page by default and see it read-only; other roles do not see it.
  • Anyone who can see an issue can use Summarise and Find duplicates on it. Drafting and breaking down epics need permission to create issues.
  • If the provider fails or returns nothing usable, the assistant simply shows no result. Check the provider in Settings and try again.
