Boards

A project's issues as cards in workflow columns, dragged from one status to the next.

Active sprint, or a project's Board tab

A board shows one project's issues as cards, one column per workflow status. Drag a card to the next column to change its status. It is the everyday view of a sprint: what is waiting, what is in progress and what is done.

Open a board

  1. Choose Active sprint in the sidebar for the workspace board, or open a project and choose its Board tab.
  2. On the workspace board, pick the project from the project menu at the top. You only see this menu when you have more than one project. The board remembers the last project you looked at in this browser.
  3. If the project has sprints, pick one from the sprint menu, or choose All sprints. The board opens on the sprint running today, or on the first open sprint if none is running.

The header shows the sprint's name and dates, and how many issues and story points are on the board after your filters.

Where the columns come from

Columns are not typed in anywhere. They come from the statuses of the workflows the project uses. When a project uses more than one workflow (for example, one tracker has its own), the board shows every status from all of them. Two workflows that share a status share one column.

  • No board configured yet: one column per status, ordered with not-started statuses first, then in-progress, then finished.
  • Configured board: the columns you chose, in your order, with your names and WIP limits.
  • A status added to the workflow later gets a column at the end automatically when it has cards in it, so no card is ever lost.
If you removed a status in Configure, its cards stay off the board. A notice above the columns tells you how many issues are in statuses that aren't on the board, with a Configure board button to bring them back.

Configure the board

People who can edit the project see a Configure button. It opens Configure board, where you can:

  • Drag columns to reorder them, or use the up and down arrows.
  • Rename a column. The status itself keeps its name.
  • Set a WIP limit on a column. Leave it empty for no limit.
  • Remove a column with the bin icon. Issues in that status keep their status; they just stop appearing on the board.
  • Add a column back from the Add a column for list, which shows every status without a column.
  • Choose the Default swimlane the board opens with.

Choose Save board to apply the changes for everyone. Saving changes how the board looks, not the workflow: to add or rename statuses, see Workflows and statuses.

Move cards

  1. Drag a card and drop it on another column.
  2. While you drag, columns the card can't move into are dimmed. Dropping on one is refused with a message, because the card's workflow has no transition there, or no such status at all.

Each card follows its own workflow, so two cards in the same column may be allowed into different places. Select a card to open the issue.

A column header shows its card count, its story points and, when a limit is set, WIP limit with how many cards it holds. Over the limit, the line turns red and says over limit. The limit is a warning: it does not stop you dropping a card.

Use the + button or Add issue at the bottom of a column to create an issue already in that status. The column's ... menu also has Collapse column, which folds the column into a narrow strip. Collapsed columns are remembered in your browser for each project.

Filters and swimlanes

  • Priority, Assignee and Labels filter the cards. The assignee list is the project's team and its lead.
  • Swimlanes group cards inside each column: No lanes, Priority, Assignee, Epic or Sprint. Issues with no epic or sprint go to a lane at the bottom.

Your filter and lane choices are only for you, and only for this visit.

What is left off the board

  • Sub-issues. They appear in their parent's child issues panel and on the roadmap, so showing them as cards too would count the same work twice.
  • Issues waiting in triage. The board is work the team has accepted. See Triage.
The board loads up to 100 issues at a time. On a busy project, pick a sprint to narrow it down.

Sprint actions on the board

With one sprint selected, the ... button next to the sprint menu opens Sprint report and Retrospective. People who can manage sprints (Owners and Admins by default) also see Complete sprint..., Edit sprint and Delete sprint. The Sprint button creates a new sprint.
