Goals and OKRs
Objectives with measurable key results, and how their progress and pace are worked out.
Goals, or a project's Goals tab
Goals are objectives and key results (OKRs). An objective says what should be different by the end of a period. Its key results say how you would know. Progress and pace are worked out for you, so everyone sees the same answer to "are we behind?".
Open goals
- Goals in the sidebar shows objectives across the workspace.
- A project's Goals tab shows that project's objectives.
The list shows Active objectives whose period hasn't ended. Use the Status filter for others (Draft, Achieved, Missed, Archived) and tick Include finished periods to see past ones. Objectives in private projects you can't see are hidden.
Create an objective
- Choose New objective. You need permission to edit projects.
- Fill in the Objective and, if you like, Why it matters (optional).
- Set Starts and Ends. Both are required, and the end must come after the start. A new objective defaults to the current quarter.
- Optionally choose a Project (or Whole organisation), an Owner, a Status, and Rolls up to (optional) to place it under a parent objective.
- Add key results with Add, then choose Create objective.
Key results
Each key result has a title, a From value, a To target, a Now value and a Unit (Number, Percent, Currency or Duration). The unit is only a label. Under Measured, choose how Now is set:
- By hand: someone types the current value. Update it straight from the objective card.
- From issues: counted from issues matching a project key, an epic key, or both. Now = From + (To − From) × (finished issues ÷ matching issues). An issue counts as finished when its status is final. It is recalculated every time the page loads. If nothing matches, the value stays at From.
How progress is calculated
- Key result progress = (Now − From) ÷ (To − From), kept between 0% and 100%. It is measured from the starting point, not from zero: raising a score from 30 to 40 isn't 75% done the moment you write it.
- Targets below the start work the same way. Cutting build time from 10 minutes to 2 counts as you go down.
- A key result whose From equals its To counts as 100%.
- Objective progress = the plain average of its key results. There are no weights. An objective with no key results is at 0%.
Progress does not roll up from child objectives to their parent. Each objective is measured by its own key results.
Pace
Pace compares progress with how much of the period has passed. 40% done is good in week two and worrying in week eleven. The marker on each progress bar shows how much of the period has gone.
- Done: progress is 100%.
- Not started: the period hasn't begun and nothing is done yet.
- On track: progress is no more than 10 points behind the share of time gone.
- At risk: between 10 and 25 points behind.
- Behind: more than 25 points behind.
After the period ends, all the time has passed, so anything unfinished is behind. The top of the list counts how many objectives are behind, at risk and on track.
Edit or delete
Use the pencil to edit an objective and its key results. Deleting an objective deletes its key results too. Objectives under it are kept and moved to the top level, and no issues are changed.
