Creating issues

Open the New issue panel, start from a template, fill in the fields and attach files — or let issues arrive from email, chat, forms and the API.

Issues → New issue

Most issues start in the New issue panel, which slides in from the right wherever you are. Issues can also arrive on their own — from email, chat, public forms and the API — or be raised on a schedule.

Open the New issue panel

  • Choose New issue at the top of the Issues page.
  • Press C anywhere outside a text box, or pick New issue in the command palette.
  • Use the add button on a board column — the issue starts in that column's status.
  • On the Roadmap, choose Epic to open the panel as New epic.

Opened from inside a project, the panel is fixed to that project.

Fill in the issue

  1. Enter a Title (2 to 200 characters). It is the only thing you have to type.
  2. Check Project and Type. Both are required, and the type list follows the project.
  3. Optionally pick a template under Start from a template (see below).
  4. Add a Description, and set Priority, Status, Estimate (points), Assignee, Start date, Due date, Sprint, Release and Parent issue as needed.
  5. Add Labels and Watchers.
  6. Choose Create issue. The new issue opens straight away.

Status starts at the workflow's first status and priority at Medium. Only sprints that are still open are offered.

You are always added as a watcher of issues you create.

Templates

Start from a template shows the templates for the chosen project plus those offered in every project. Picking one fills in the description and can set the type, priority and labels; its title appears as a hint in the Title box. If you have already typed a description, you are asked before it is replaced. Blank clears it. Templates are not offered when creating an epic.

Admins manage templates in Administration → Templates. See Issue templates.

People pickers follow the project

Assignee and Watchers list the chosen project's team and its lead, not the whole workspace. Changing the project clears them, along with sprint and release. If nobody is listed, add people in the project's Team page.

Custom fields

Custom fields switched on for the project appear below the main fields, already filled with any default value. A field marked * is required, and the issue will not be created until it has a value. Formula and rollup fields do not appear here; they show on the issue once it exists.

Attachments

Choose Attach files to add files of up to 50 MB each. They upload once the issue has been created; if an upload fails, the issue still exists and you can attach the file again from the issue page.

Drafting with AI

Where AI assistance is available to your workspace, the panel can draft an issue from a sentence: a title, a description with acceptance criteria, a type and a priority. The draft only fills the form — check it before you create the issue.

Other ways issues are created

  • Clone issue in an issue's More actions menu makes a copy in the same project.
  • Email intake turns incoming email into issues.
  • Chat intake turns Slack or Teams messages into issues.
  • Forms let people outside the workspace submit issues.
  • The API creates issues from your own tools.
  • Recurring work raises an issue from a template on a schedule.
  • Importing issues brings issues in from another tool.
In a project with triage turned on, issues from these channels — and from anyone not on the project's team — wait in the Triage inbox first. See Triage.
