Issue automations

When an issue is created, updated or commented on and matches your conditions, change it, comment on it or tell someone.

Settings → Issue automations

An issue automation is a rule: when an issue is created, updated or commented on, and it matches your conditions, do something to it. Use them to route work, set priorities, move issues along and keep people informed without doing it by hand.

Create an automation

  1. Open Settings and choose Issue automations (under Work management).
  2. Choose New automation and give it a Name.
  3. Under When, pick the trigger.
  4. Add conditions under If all of these are true, and actions under Then.
  5. Under Changes are made as, pick the member the changes are made in the name of.
  6. Choose Save. New automations are switched on.

Triggers

  • An issue is created
  • An issue is updated
  • A comment is added

Conditions

All conditions must be true for the rule to run. With none, it runs for every issue. You can test:

  • Type, Priority, Status, Open or closed and Project — is, is not, or is one of (a comma-separated list).
  • Title and Description — contains, does not contain, is set, is empty.
  • Assignee — is, is not, is set, is empty.
  • Label — is or is not.
  • Changed field — only for the updated trigger: which field the update changed.

Actions

  • Set priority
  • Move to status
  • Assign to — a member, or Nobody (unassign)
  • Add label
  • Add comment — the comment notes which automation added it
  • Notify — sends a member an in-app notification

A rule can have up to ten actions.

How rules run

  • Enabled rules for a trigger are checked in order, against the issue as it was at that moment. Every rule that matches runs.
  • Changes go through the normal checks — such as the workflow's allowed transitions — as the chosen member, and show in history under their name.
  • Changes an automation makes never trigger other automations, so rules cannot loop.
  • If the chosen member is deactivated or removed, the rule stops applying and records a failure.
Open a rule to see Recent runs: each issue it ran on, and whether it applied or failed and why. The list shows how many times each rule has run and when it last ran. Automations do not use AI.

Turn off or delete

Use the switch beside a rule to turn it off or on. To delete, open it and choose Delete; issues it already changed keep those changes. Viewing automations needs the automation read permission; creating and changing them needs automation update.
